Barbecue University®: A Weekend of Live-Fire Cooking with Steven Raichlen

It’s official! Barbecue University® has a new home: the majestic Alisal Ranch in Solvang, California.

Majestic? Picture a 10,000 acre ranch with only 73 luxurious guest rooms. Picture miles of trails, with more than 100 resident horses to ride on them. Picture storybook towns (nearby Solvang channels Denmark) and all the vineyards and wineries you could wish for. The cult wine movie, Sideways, was filmed in neighboring Los Olivos, and if you started drinking tomorrow, you couldn’t finish all the great local vintages.

If all this sounds familiar, you get a gold star for paying attention. It was here, at this very ranch, that Steven taped Season 3 of his hit PBS TV show Project Smoke and Season 1 of Project Fire.

So what’s new for this year’s Barbecue University®? A new classroom—located in the Alisal’s rodeo ring—really! Killer new grills, including the latest Weber and Traeger flattops and of course some Santa Maria wood-burners. Lavish meals accompanied by local wines. And plenty of time off to enjoy the boutique towns and scenic Santa Ynez Valley.

And of course, there are all new menus—based on Steven’s new Public Television show: Planet Barbecue™. Get ready for carne asado breakfast tacos; oak-smoked, cherry-glazed ribs; Santa Maria tri-tip; Spanish shrimp a la plancha; West Indian grilled squash; smoked scorched crème brulees;, and so much more.
