10 Recipe Resolutions in 2016

As we ring in the new year, tradition dictates that we create a resolution (or 12). Among tidiness, exercise, and finally meeting the neighbors, why not involve our favorite place, the grill? Trying new recipes and cooking methods will shake up your routine, enhance your meals and stimulate your mind—isn’t that what New Year’s resolutions should be about? I think we’re onto something here.

Simply bookmark this page and come back to it when you’re ready to take your grilling to the next level.

  1. The 3-2-1 Method for Ribs: We all have our favorite ribs recipe. I challenge you to shake it up and try a new one. This 6-hour process gives you meat so tender it virtually slides off the bone, with the multiple layers of flavor most of us associate with great barbecue.

  2. Game On! Herb-Crusted Venison Filets: Grilling game meats will shake up your routine. A bonus to help with your other resolutions: game has considerably less fat than beef, pork, and other domesticated animals. Hoisin Glazed Quail is another stimulating game recipe to try.

  3. Impress Guests with Bourbon Pecan Pork Loin: Try serving something new next time you host family and friends. Glazed inside and out, this pork makes a terrific centerpiece for a dinner party and turns pretty much any evening meal into a holiday.

  4. Grill Everything, Even Pumpkin Pie: Meat isn’t the only thing you can cook over an open flame. And this pie is worth breaking your weight loss resolutions for.

  5. Follow an Internet Craze: Step right up! Try the Internet sensation: Onion Bomb. What? You haven’t heard of it? Imagine the outer layers of an onion, split, stuffed with a meatloaf-like mixture, wrapped in bacon, and smoke-roasted into an orb of meaty awesomeness. This craze might be here to stay.

  6. Impress Your Butcher—Porterhouse vs. T-Bone: T-bones and porterhouses are a steak lover’s nirvana—a New York strip and a tenderloin, a.k.a. filet mignon, connected by a gnaw-worthy T-shaped bone. Learn to spot the subtle differences and order one from your butcher in terms that will make him think you’re an insider.

  7. Make a Killer Cheese Plate: The title says it all. You’re welcome.

  8. Stay Home and Grill Your Own Hangover Cure: Say goodbye to 10AM Saturday drive thrus in 2016, and say hello to a homemade sandwich that will have you feeling right as rain in no time.

  9. Take Up a New Hobby: If basket weaving counts as a productive hobby, why not bacon weaving? You may not be able to store anything in your bacon weave, but at least it doesn’t taste like bark!

  10. It All Tastes Better Made on a Grill You Built: It’s not just about the food you make, it’s about the grill you use. And why not build your own? This grill enjoys cult status in Germany, but is virtually unknown elsewhere: a unique hanging grill called the schwenker. Give it a try this year to complete your grilling experimentation.
