A Grilled Menu for Memorial Day

Wagyu Smash Burger with Parmesan Crisps

Memorial Day will be celebrated on Monday, May 30, this year. Originally called Decoration Day, the holiday was created three years after the end of the Civil War to honor the fighting men and women who gave their lives for their country. Today, in addition to being a day of remembrance, most Americans consider Memorial Day to be the unofficial start of summer and by association, the grilling season! Make it the best yet with these Memorial Day Recipes.

We like to kick it off with a traditional menu of hamburgers and hot dogs. We’re especially fond of juicy “smash burgers” made with Wagyu ground beef (Crowd Cow is one of our favorite purveyors of premium meats) and hot dogs—the latter scored to maximize their exposure to live fire, a genius technique called “hedgehogging.” (We have Russ Faulk of luxury grill maker Kalamazoo Gourmet to thank for the trick.) Smoked Potato Salad would make a great side dish.

Preface the feast with colorful Smoked Deviled Eggs—you can make them ahead of the party—and conclude the meal with decadent Chocolate Brownie S’Mores or a berry fruit crisp baked in a cast iron skillet and served with ice cream or whipped cream.
